Well, i was thinking of spawning a set amount of Adminium, and then using it as a currency.
Thoughts? Ideas?

What do you mean by "set amount"? Would there ever be more?
How would we decide how it's initially distributed?
There's a really complicated way involving bidding that would ensure that everyone gets the right amount, but I'm open to ideas.

First of all, let's use sponges. You can spawn them (I tested), but they're not useful like adminium.
And we had the idea that, for the first few weeks at least, we could have a "general store" that can sell and buy stuff to and from the users at set prices, and then we start out by not allowing people to sell stuff to the general store, then closing it entirely once all its property is gone.

Here's the relative values we had so far:
64 dirt = 1 cobble
5 iron = 64 cobble
1 coal = 10 cobble
1 gold = 64 cobble

If you just want a block that has absolutely no use and can't be created/found naturally, you could use snow, which has even less use than sponges. (Sponges could be used to prevent a lot of clever traps.)

except sponges don't actually sponge.

Personally, I'm opposed to the idea of having a set amount of "currency" injected into the community. Let supply and demand govern relative pricing. Besides, the only things worth having do one of two things: Useful for something or Look pretty. What would be the incentive to obtain more of this useless currency. If it isn't useful or looks nice, it isn't worth having, IMO.
I wouldn't be at all opposed to a general store, in fact, I think it'd be a nice addition to our community. The only problem I would have with it is if you spawned all the stock rather than gathering it.

Actually, the best way to set the currency would be to have exactly one conversion ratio that you _could_ use. For example, you can destroy one sponge and summon 64 cobble. That way, you can use it as a token of "worth 64 cobble," and figure out conversion ratios from there.

I think the general store should be JUST selling, because that would get more cash flow going on.
Also, we should have "packs", which would be like "Starter Pack! full set of stone tools! 64 Cobblestone! 64 Planks!"
and then more advanced versions.

BUT
HOW DO WE MAKE A SHOWCASE?

...I like my idea better. (Something most people do.)

Do you mean just selling things in exchange for sponges, or vice-versa?

well I used this program i have to evaluate the number of each type of block and the commonality relative to stone in a randomly generated map which should be a large enough sample size:
Stone: 36248385; 1
Iron ore: 183454; 0.005061
Coal ore: 390686; 0.010778

I then calculated the equivalent iron ore to iron ingot conversion by commonality
Iron ingot = 0.125 coal + iron ore
Coal = 0.4696 iron ore
iron ingot = 1.0587 iron ore

but of course time is also expended in smelting and getting over to ones furnace so i felt a times 2 convenience multiplier which can be adjusted if its discovered to be too low or too high empirically:
1 iron ingot = 0.529348 Iron Ore

but to obtain the iron ore one must expend a portion of a pickaxe(excluding sticks), and since stone is the minimum material to mine iron thats what i'll evaluate with:
1 pickaxe = 3 cobblestone
1 iron ore = 1/64 stone pickaxe
1 iron ore = 0.046875 cobblestone of cost

by commonality:
1 cobblestone = 0.005061 iron ore
so theres a
0.046875*0.005061 = 0.00023723 iron ore more cost

yielding the conversion:
1 iron ingot = 0.52959 iron ore

I did the iron conversions first because its the most utilitarian resource to me, common enough to be used widely and still reasonably quick and many uses. the coal to iron ore conversion can be extended to 1 iron ingot = 0.2486 coal
all these values were determined theoretically though commonality on an 'average' map, they will probably have to be tweaked with how effort to obtain each type of block comes into play, such has how much easier it is to get cobblestone than iron ore.

hell yeah minecraft economics!
Might want to do several random maps, but that's a pretty big sample already so whatever

I think the idea of some sort of central conversion building that one can visit to trade in commodities for a currency is a good one, as long as the commodities are retained. Also, I think that one should have to visit the central conversion building (or kiosks?) in order to make commodity->currency transfers or vice versa. Otherwise you could just mine a ton of cobble and hack in diamonds for it that don't exist. Basically, hacking in shouldn't be used for transfers because it diminishes the value of very rare commodities such as diamond.

Also, csunday gets major props. I await moar conversions :3

Edit: What tool did you use, btw?
